No, I’m not joking. Plentyofdoggies has to be the second-weirdest review request we’ve received here at Useful Tools, coming in right behind the Swiss DNA bank. Basically, it’s an online dating service and social networking site for dogs. Kind of like Dogster, but more focused on matchmaking.
So, here’s how it works: you sign in, create a profile for your dog, answer some questions about what type of relationship he or she is looking for (anything from “marriage” to “intimate encounters” to “activity partners”) and then look for likely matches. There is also a Twitter-ish status update feature. Like Twitter, it is limited to 140 characters-I guess it’s a good thing that my pups aren’t deep thinkers, then.
Okay, so I have a confession to make: I don’t get it. I don’t. I’m a dog person, I love my dogs, I basically treat them like surrogate children and I’m sure they think of themselves as little fuzzy people. But that doesn’t mean they need a social networking site of their very own. If I wanted them to have social networking profiles, I’d make them MySpace pages (‘Cause who else hangs out on MySpace these days, anyway?)
I can see where PlentyofDoggies would be useful to breeders looking for a suitable match for their purebred dog. I’m just not sure the average dog owner is going to get much out of it. After all, if you want to find a playmate for your dog, wouldn’t it be easier to stake out the local dog park? Or take training classes at Petco?
In any event, the website itself needs some work before it will even be useful for breeders. When I log in and try to view my dog’s profile, I get a screen that tells me “You do not have access here!” Why do I not have access to my dog’s profile? Also, I have three dogs and made profiles for two of them, but on my page, only one profile shows up. That’s no good, especially for breeders who likely as not have more than one dog to match.
Additionally, when viewing lists of potential doggy “dates,” there’s no way to filter results by location. That feature needs to be added ASAP if this service is ever to be useful for anyone, as I assure you my dog is not interested in a long distance relationship.
Obviously, I think this site needs a lot of improvement. It also needs more users. In the meantime, if you really want to bond over the Internet with other dog lovers, check out Dogster, which has an already-established community and a forum dedicated to local tips, playdates and meetups. And yes, you can make your dog a profile!

That’s the great thing about the internet-there are communities for everybody, even people who think their dogs actually need to get married. That said, it’s obvious I think this site needs a good deal of work before it will even be useful to its target audience.
