These days, maintaining a presence on social networking sites is an essential part of building your career. Linked-in is the most popular career-oriented social networking site, but its value is largely based on who is in your network, not what skills you have.

Skills Log is a social networking site for professionals that is based on skills instead of contacts.  Your profile is like an interactive resume, listing your skills, your skill levels, your education and your experience. If you’re looking for someone with a specific skill, it’s easy to find them by simply clicking on the list of skills on the front page. You can also search your contacts list only for people with certain skills.

It’s fairly simple to set up a profile on Skills Log, but the  arrow that supposedly lets you link your skills to your experience didn’t work for me.  I like the way Skills Log makes it easy to find people based on skills, but frankly, it’s not going to be truly useful unless a lot of people use it. And, I’m not sure how well it will be able to compete with Linked In. It’s not as easy to search for people by skill on Linked In, but it’s certainly not impossible, either, if you use a keyword search.

  8. Thanks for the review Alison, it’s always great to hear feedback.

Rather than competing head-on with LinkedIn we’re working on creating applications for both OpenSocial (so can be used on LinkedIn) and Facebook, so you’ll be able to search the skills of your contacts on those networks, provided of course your contacts also have a Skills Log.

Also, I’m not sure why the skill linking didn’t work for you; we’ve tested on most browsers, but if you get the chance please let me know which browser you’re using and which version, we’ll take a look.

    Thanks again for the feedback.
