If you have a Twitter account for your website or business, you may want to allow multiple users to manage it. Allowing each individual user to identify themselves helps make the account seem more personal, showing that your account is being handled by a real person.
Twitter is working on allowing multiple users to tweet from business accounts, but hasn’t yet offered the functionality to everyone. In the meantime, several startups are rushing in to fill the gap. The most famous of these is CoTweet, but there’s also Bird Herd, a new startup in private beta (via ReadWriteWeb).
Bird Herd is easy to use-just give it access to the group account using OAuth, then add the individual Twitter usernames of the people you want to tweet on the account. individuals can then send a DM to the group account and have it broadcast as a tweet with their usernames added to the end.
Allowing someone access to the group Twitter account is as easy as adding their username to Bird Herd, and taking it away is as easy as hitting the “remove” button-no need to change the account password. Authorized users can use whatever Twitter client they’ve grown comfortable with, and Bird Herd will forward DMs to their accounts for them to sort through.
If you have a large organization, CoTweet is still a better option at the moment. Both tools are “free for now,” so we’ll have to wait and see which ends up offering the better value when premium accounts and monthly fees come into play.
