When I was in college, I ditched living in the dorms after the first semester to share an off-campus apartment with some friends. I loved living with my friends, and I’m still friends with my roommates today-but when you have four college kids sharing their first apartment, some tension is probably inevitable.
There were a couple of different issues that interfered with our otherwise harmonious co-existence: money and chores. BillsAreIn, (h/t to Lifehacker) a budgeting program made especially for shared households, could have helped alleviate some of the arguments about money.
BillsAreIn lets you keep track of the bills for your shared household. You can easily split the bills up between housemates, either having each person pay an equal share or assigning a specific dollar amount for each person. BillsAreIn keeps track of who owes what, who owes who, who has paid and who hasn’t.
Did you buy your roommate a six-pack last night? Enter an IOU for it in BillsAreIn. Each roommate can log into the BillsAreIn account separately to see what bills are due, what they’ve paid, who owes them money and how much money they are owed. So, there’s no longer an excuse for your roommate to “forget” he owes you beer money!
BillsAreIn also has a calender to help you plan for bills, parties and other expenses. The statistics page keeps track of who pays the bills on time and who doesn’t. Email reminders remind you and your roommates of when the bills are due, and if you usually pay out of your bank account, you can use BillsAreIn to have roommates pay you by direct deposit or Paypal.
BillsAreIn is a great way to make sure that everyone is paying their fair share of the bills in a shared household. The site is laid out well and easy to navigate, and I liked the fact that it has extras like a built-in calculator for splitting up bills. I also liked the fact that each roommate can log in and handle their own account, and that payments you enter in to the system have to be approved by your roommate before the bill will show as paid.
Now, if only there was a similar program for chores…
