Are you looking for something to watch tonight? HelloMovies wants to help! HelloMovies is a searchable movie database and recommendation site, kind of like Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB. The cool thing about HelloMovies is that you can look for movies based on where they are playing, so you can narrow your selection down to movies that are still in theaters, movies you cna watch for free online, movies available from Netflix, etc.
You can also filter movies based on genre and “tastes.” However, some of the “taste” categories didn’t really make sense to me, especially considering the movies that came up. For example, when I tried to browse “steamy” fantasy movies, I found it quite amusing that “Labyrinth” showed up on the first page of results. Um…I suppose perhaps when I was 10, watching David Bowie prance around in pants that are WAY too tight for a children’s flick could have qualified as “steamy,” but I’m over that now.
Another “taste” category is “provocative.” Provocative fantasy movies apparently include “The Golden Compass.” In fairness, I believe the Roman Catholic Church and some conservative Christian groups found both the movie and the series of books it was based on to be “provocative,” since organized religion is the villain. But then, go a little bit further down the screen, and there’s the movie version of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Who in the heck did THAT movie provoke? Seriously, I can’t see how the movie version of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” counts as provocative in any sense of the word.
Choose a movie you like, and you can see reviews written by site members and pulled from IMBd and Rotten Tomatoes. You’ll also get 4 recommendations for similar movies. The reviews are often well-written and helpful, but the limited number of recommendations is disappointing.
Basically, while HelloMovies was fun to browse, I think Jinni does a much better job of recommending movies that you will like. With Jinni, if you say like a movie, you can get a bunch of good recommendations based on that alone. And, if you just want to browse their database, the fact that they have a lot more categories than HelloMovies makes it easier to narrow down your search.
