Call in Your Tweets

tweetcall

Are you temporarily cut off from the internet? Is there something on your mind that you just have to announce to the world via Twitter? Now, you can call in your tweets with Tweetcall (via MakeUseOf).

Here’s how it works-go to Tweetcall’s website, enter in your Twitter username and password, your phone # and a PIN. Whenever you want to call in a tweet, you can simply call Tweetcall from the phone registered to your account, enter your PIN and speak your tweet. Tweetcall transcribes your tweet for you and posts it to Twitter.

Tweetcall is super-easy to use, but there are a couple of drawbacks. First, it doesn’t use OAuth, so you have to fork over your Twitter username and password. Second, there’s no way to tell when you’ve gone over 140 characters while you are talking.  If your tweet goes over 140 characters, it just gets cut off. And of course, there is no way to use abbreviations with this service.

Voice transcription is almost never 100% accurate,  and Tweetcall is no exception, despite having real people on hand to proofread the transcriptions before they are posted. My first Tweetcall tweet, “Wow, I really need more coffee,” came through fine. But, when I called in reciting the first verse of Keat’s “Ode to a Nightingale”  (I wanted to see what happened when if you talked over Twitter’s 140 character limit, and I wasn’t feeling particularly loquacious), I got this:

“My heart aches and a drowsy numbness pains my sense. As those him walk I had drunk.Or emptied sun dial opiate to the drains”

So, if you choose to use Tweetcall, remember to enunciate and keep it simple.

I could see Tweetcall being especially useful in the car, using a hands-free headset, of course.  Safety first, people, safety first!

I don’t see myself using it very often, though-I usually don’t have an urgent need to tweet while I’m driving, and I have a smartphone with a data plan, so I can access Twitter on the go and just type in what I want to say.
