As much as I liked Ronin when I reviewed it the other day, it still doesn’t beat my current accounting program.  I was thinking about it, and I decided I really ought to clue you, my dear readers, into what I use, because as many accounting apps as I reviewed, I haven’t found one that would make me want to switch.

Less Accounting bills itself as an easier-to-use, web-based substitute for programs like Quickbooks and PeachTree. It’s a full featured accounting app that not only lets you send invoices, but also lets you track payments and tax-deductible business expenses.

Things I love about Less Accounting (in no particular order)

Custom invoices-you can add your business’ logo and choose from a wide array of templates, which can be further customized by changing the colors of the background and the text.

The ability to tag payments and expenses, so that I can see how much I’ve made working with a particular client and how much I’ve paid in fees to Paypal and freelance bidding websites.

The ability to import contacts from Gmail (or Basecamp, or Highrise)-a HUGE timesaver!

If you’re just getting started with Less Accounting, you can import data from your bank or your computer.

The ability to track expenses (and upload receipts), not just invoices and payments.

The ability to create proposals and turn them into invoices.

The ability to include a Paypal button inside the invoices.

Other nifty features that I don’t use personally include the ability to import your bank data automatically, the ability to invite other users (like co-workers or your accountant) and the ability to record payroll transactions.

Plus, their customer service has always been good, and their prices are competitive. Note for workers who bill hourly: integrated time tracking is available, but you have to sign up (and pay for) LessTimeSpent, a separate time-tracking app.
