Once upon a time, people communicated in one of two ways: talking or writing letters. Now, we have more ways to stay in touch than ever before, including email, text messaging, social networking sites and instant messaging. We are awash in so many conversations that sometimes it’s hard to keep track of them all.
Silentale helps you keep track of the conversations you have via email, IM, Twitter and Facebook. First, it creates a list of all of your contacts, matching up people’s profiles across the different services you use to keep in touch. Then, it archives your messages and lets you view them on timeline. With Silentale, you can zoom in on a particular contact and see all of the tweets, emails, and Facebook messages that you’ve exchanged with that particular person, all organized in chronological order.
This makes it easy to keep track of a conversation that started on Twitter, moved to email and ended up on Facebook. Plus, you can search all of your messages for particular keywords, as well. There’s also a Firefox extension that lets you see contact details and messages exchanged with contacts as you browse on different social networking sites and email accounts. Soon, they plan to release Android and iPhone apps and will be able to archive your text messages, too.
Silentale’s still in private beta, but I got an invite to try it out last night. The service is easy to set up and has an attractive, well-thought out user interface. I like that the top of the page has a slider you can use to move backwards and forwards in time. That’s handy!
So far, though, Silentale hasn’t pulled any messages from my accounts, only contacts. I emailed Silentale support and got a quick, courteous reply, and they are trying to figure out what’s going on.
At this point, I’m pretty excited about Silentale. My only quibble is that there needs to be a way to delete contacts or at least hide them. There are so many people that I’ve emailed maybe once or twice for jobs, or simply don’t talk to anymore. I really don’t want to have to scroll through them to find the people I still talk to.
Still, I think Silentale’s concept is excellent, I appreciate their strict privacy policy, and I can’t wait until they release their Android app! What do you think of it?
