A Fortress in the Cloud For Your Data

Spideroak

Everyone knows that backing up your data is important, but how many people actually do it consistently? According to this article by CNN Money, only about 57 percent of us do!

Spideroak makes backing up data easier than ever, so there’s really no excuse for not doing it. With Spideroak, you can upload all of the files on your computer and store them safely in the cloud. You can access your files from any computer, and if your system does crash, all you have to do is download your files again once it’s back up.

There are a variety of  online backup services available, of course, but Spideroak has some neat features that set it apart. For example, you can download it on as many computers as you like (it’s compatible with PCs, Macs and machines running Linux). Plus, the 2 GB of free storage space is based on the size of your files after they are compressed. Spideroak also claims that their “advanced data de-duplication” (say that 5 times fast-I dare you!) process maximizes the amount of data you can store as well as minimizing upload times.

Another neat feature that Spideroak offers is the ability to create secure “share rooms” to share documents with other people. You choose what documents to share, and only people who have the room URL and “room key” can log in to see it.

Spideroak is easy to download, set up and navigate. The first 2 GB of storage is free, and if you need more than that, you can buy 100Gb for $10 per month.  The one caveat-to protect your privacy, nobody at Spideroak can see your data and nobody has your password. If you lose your password, you will be locked out of your Spideroak account forever and ever, amen.

Do you back up your data? If so, how?

  4. Just wanted to add that SpiderOak just released SpiderOak 3.6 into the wild with several improvements in design, usability and back end and we are scheduled to release a iPhone app for accessing our online file-shares in the near future, all of course included in our service at no extra cost.

  7. Backing up data is truly a challenge. I find the best way to back up is using one of the online backup services.

There are many such service providers out there. The best way to pick an online backup company is by Googling “Online Backup Review”.

There are good review sites and read their rankings, ratings, features and so on, and then decide which one to pick.

  10. SpiderOak’s online backup service is a great solution; the biggest limitation is that there is no unlimited backups option. SpiderOak is one of the only online backup providers we’ve reviewed which supports Linux, too.

They just released a new version today, announced at http://twitter.com/Spideroak_Inc/status/5860125060

  11. Dropbox also supports linux (www.getdropbox.com), also Ubuntu One will be able to do the same thing for Ubuntu users (one.ubuntu.com).

Dropbox is the easiest of all of them to use, but you the things you want to backup or share need to be in the Dropbox dedicated folder, which usually means duplication. Spider Oak seems very robust but I’ve found creating shares that others can modify ridiculously difficult. Still haven’t sorted that yet.
