A little over a month ago, I reviewed Springpad, a service that helps you get organized using online notebooks. I’m re-reviewing them because they actually just made some pretty substantial changes to the website, and I’m happy to report that they just keep getting better.
Springpartners’ CEO Jeff Janer was kind enough to give me a tour of the new and improved Springpad. One thing I noticed immediately was the interface, which is much more streamlined and easier to navigate. Now, you can easily shift between 3 different tabs: your stuff, your friend’s stuff and your Springpads, which are now called “Apps.”
On the “My Stuff” Tab, you can collect and organize data, tagging notes, recipes, etc and adding them to different apps. Springpad still has the same excellent tagging and filtering capability that has made them so useful to me in the past, plus they’ve added the ability to put items into groups for more precise organization.
Another nifty feature is the ability to search both your friend’s Springpads and the web for items like recipes and restaurants. The restaurant search feature pulls information from Yahoo Local and didn’t work that well for me, but that’s not Springpad’s fault, it’s Yahoo’s. I live in a small city-you’ll probably get better results if you live in a major metropolitan area.
Springpad has also become more social. You have always been able to follow other Springpad users and grab items from their collections, but the new design puts this feature front and center, whereas before it seemed more like an afterthought. The new Springpad also makes it easier to share items you have collected via Facebook and Twitter.
Finally, Springpad has also set up partnerships with several popular food and wine bloggers, most notably Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV. Springpad partners have a special Springpad button on their site that allows you to save content with a single click. After you’ve saved it, you can also share it via Facebook or Twitter, an advantage over the “Spring It” bookmarklet button.
Springpad has also reorganized the App directory to make it easier to find the app you are looking for. Of course, you can still make your own-just choose the “Basic Notebook ” and customize to your heart’s content. While he was giving me the tour, Jeff Janer said that soon, Springpad will open its API to everyone, so that you can create your own Springpad app and share it with the world.
So, to sum it all up in nutshell, the new Springpad has an improved UI, better Facebook and Twitter integration, and new partnerships that make it easier for you to discover new recipes and wines. Speaking of wine, I think I’m off to have a glass before bed. You should go to check out Springpad, and let me know what you think in the comments!
