Email marketing and newsletters can be an effective way to get the word out about your product or service. However, spammers shilling everything from online Viagra to magic potions that promise to help you lose 50 pounds in 2 weeks have made things much more difficult for legitimate email marketers.
Spam filters keep consumers’ email inboxes from overflowing with garbage, but they sometimes catch legitimate newsletters and marketing emails, as well. Is Not Spam is a tool that tests your newsletter or email to increase the chance that it actually makes it into your recipients’ inboxes.
Is Not Spam is really simple to use. Just cut and paste the HTML code or text into the tool, add the subject line, and click on “send.” Is Not Spam will check your email to see if it is likely to trigger a spam filter, then report back with the results. Is your newsletter giving off the distinctive aroma of a freshly opened can of Spam? No worries- Is Not Spam will also give you suggestions for how to fix it.
I tested it using two emails: one that made it into my inbox and one that got shot straight to the spam folder. In this (admittedly unscientific) test, Is Not Spam performed perfectly, marking the legitimate email as “Not Spam” and the notice that my email address has been selected to receive millions of dollars from Royal Dutch Foundation as “Spam.” A multi-million dollar grant just for me? Gee, I should check my spam folder more often!
There are other tools out there that do the exact same thing, including Mailing Check and Spamcheck. I gave Is Not Spam a low score for innovation because there really wasn’t anything that differentiated it from the competition. Is Not Spams’ user interface is adequate but not stunning. However, if you rely on mass emails to keep in touch with your clients, customers or readers, Is Not Spam is definitely a useful tool.
