Raise your hand if you use the same password for a number of online accounts. Yeah, I thought so. Security experts tell us that it’s safest to have a different password for each account-but who has the brain space for all of those passwords?
Passpack is an extremely handy online app that remembers all of your passwords for you-so there’s no longer an excuse for you to make yourself vulnerable by using the same password for everything. Or for not changing your password periodically.
In addition to storing your passwords for you, Passpack has a super-convenient one-click login button that you can install in your browser to automatically log in to your accounts from your home computer. Also, since most of us have like, a gazillion online accounts with passwords, Passpack also lets you organize them using tags.
Now, my initial reaction to this service was something along the lines of “Yeah, right. Like I’m going to give all of my passwords to some random company?” However, Passpack is reassuringly fanatical about security. They use US government-approved encryption, and your data is encrypted from your computer before it is sent to Passpack. To access your data, you use a “packing key” that only you know. Nobody at Passpack has your packing key, and without your packing key, your data remains encrypted and indecipherable.
Think of your packing key as “one password to rule them all.” Just make sure not to lose it or forget it-that would be the equivalent of tossing it into Mount Doom where it will be lost forever, along with all of your passwords and account information. (No, I really couldn’t resist the LOTR allusions. Sorry.)
For extra security, you can also set up a personalized welcome message (to help you avoid phishing scams). You can customize the level of security for each account you have stored on Passpack, and you can generate disposable log-ins and passwords for your Passpack account if you will be using a public computer. There’s also the option to connect with other people on Passpack for top-secret discussions.
Passpack has an attractive, well-designed UI. It’s easy to navigate, and you can find account information either by searching or by pulling up the relevant tag. And, of course, the One-Click Log In feature rules.
