Who’s Who On Twitter

twitwho

New to Twitter, or just looking to meet interesting new people? According to this post from Mashable, Twitter had about 6 million users in April, and that number will likely double in size over the course of 2009.  That’s a lot of people to sift through! TwitWho wants to be  like a phone book for Twitter, helping you find people with common interests.

TwitWho’s easy to use-all you have to do is browse through the different categories to see individual Twitter groups. Each group has its own stream, so you can view the group members’ tweets in real-time. If you want to follow someone, just sign in with OAuth. That’s it!

The only problem is that the service is still in its infancy. Many of the categories are empty or very sparsely populated. TwitWho is human-powered, so it needs to attract more humans to help create and moderate its Twitter groups.  For the time being, at least, newbie twitterers would be better served by checking out WeFollow, Mr. Tweet or Twibes.

TwitWho makes it to easy create custom groups that aren’t listed in the main TwitWho directory, but to start a new category or get yourself listed in an existing category in the main directory, you have to send an email to the moderator of that group.  I think this process could be improved by adding a form to fill out right on the page. If you need people to help you with your service, you need to make it as easy as possible for them to do so.

As it stands now, I think TwitWho has the potential to become useful if enough people use it, but right now, it’s just not the best way to find people OR to organize your tweets.

What do you think of TwitWho? And what is your favorite Twitter directory? Let us know in the comments!

  1. TwitWho is human-powered? That must be a lot of tasks to do for its team. But the quality and the relevance will be nice. I think Twitter should add tags to its site, so that all the users can be searched by tags.

  2. I agree completely-tags for Twitter users is an awesome idea!
