A Personal Shopper That Knows What You Need

Have you ever woken up to find yourself completely out of essentials like toilet paper or coffee? It makes for an unpleasant morning, doesn’t it? Alice.com is a new site that aims to keep you from running out of life’s little essentials.

Here’s how it works-when you join Alice, you make a list of the people who live in your household and the types of products you use. You can shop for products online via Alice. They have multiple brands available, offer free shipping, and they let you compare the prices on Alice to the  prices on other websites.  Based on the number of people in your household, Alice calculates how long it will take you to run out of each product, and it will remind when it thinks you are running low. You can also configure these reminders by hand, if you run out of products more or less frequently than Alice thinks you should.

There’s also a social networking aspect to Alice. You can set up a profile, make friends and chat.

Alice’s prices are typically much better than other online retailers, especially considering that the shipping is free. That said, their products are all name brands, and there’s only a few non-perishable items that I actually shop for by brand. Brand selection is somewhat limited, too, but that’s probably to be expected since the service is so new.

In the few cases where Alice carries brands I like that my grocery store doesn’t carry, I may use it for those items. However,  it’s not going to replace a trip to the grocery store for items like cereal, where I usually buy the store brand or just make my own.

Kudos to Alice for an innovative concept, and the user interface is  nice, too-attractive and easy to navigate, with search and filtering options that make it easy to sort through the products they carry.  However, I’m not sure how useful it will be to me-that depends on how the products that they carry change over time. I think it could be useful for someone who prefers brand-name products over store brands and doesn’t have a lot of time to go shopping-especially once Alice gets the “Auto-Ship” function up and running.

What do you think of Alice?
