When I was little, I wanted to be a librarian. What could be more awesome than working with books all day? Unfortunately, as I got older, it became exceedingly obvious that I lack the necessary organizational skills for such a position. I can’t keep track of the books I have, much less a whole library of them!
BeepMyStuff is a neat little app that makes it much easier to keep track of your personal library of books, music and video games. All you have to do to get an item listed is scan its bar code with your webcam. Then, BeepMyStuff will pull information about the item from Amazon.com and list it in your library. How easy is that?
Unfortunately, if all you have is the crappy webcam that came standard on your netbook, BeepMyStuff may not work for you. Also, if you have older books or an older vinyl collection, there may not be a bar code for you to scan. Fortunately, BeepMyStuff offers two ways to enter these items into your library: you can search Amazon and pull the information from there, or you can enter all the details manually.
There’s also a social aspect to BeepMyStuff. You can invite your friends (or meet new ones) and see what they have in their collections. Is there a book or a CD you’d like to borrow? BeepMyStuff makes it easy to find out who to ask. Of course, if you’d prefer not to share your porn collection with the world, you can mark your collection as “private.”
I love this concept. It’s great for people who have a lot of stuff to keep track of, and I could also see it becoming exceedingly useful if you needed to file a home insurance claim on your media collection.
I do wish there were a way to import existing library information. I have some friends that have a huge media collection. I could see them loving this app-but they’re already tracking their music and movie collections on their home computers, and I know they wouldn’t want to have to scan hundreds of CD’s and DVD’s all over again. Although BeepMyStuff alphabetizes your stuff automatically, a “Search” function would also make it more useful.
