Twitter is awesome, but it can also be a little bit…overwhelming. There are several Twitter applications that allow you to organize your Twitter stream by dividing people into groups, but then you might miss out on something interesting by someone not in your group. Philtro is an app designed to filter out the tweets you are most likely to be interested in and bring them to you.
It’s kind of like Pandora for Twitter…you can rate tweets with a “thumbs-up” or a “thumbs-down,” and Philtro will filter them out accordingly. For instance, I’m sorry, but I don’t want to hear about “1000 Ways to Make Free Money On the Internet.” I don’t need real-time updates on the MJ case, either. So, by thumbing down tweets with these topics, and I can filter them out of my Twitter stream.
On the other hand, I can upvote tweets that talk about interesting new web apps, technology and other topics I’m interested in. Eventually, like Pandora, Philtro learns what you like to read about and sorts your tweets accordingly. You can also update your status from Philtro, and if you hover your mouse over a specific tweet, you get the option to retweet, reply, DM or Favorite the person who created it.
The user interface is neat and easy to navigate. However, when you are updating your status it has a tendency to start flashing like a strobe light, which is kind of obnoxious. Of course, that may have just been my computer. It takes a little bit of time to train it, and like Pandora, it’s not perfect, but it does improve over time. Philtro’s creator, Paul Singh, was kind enough to submit this app to us and fill out our questionnaire. Eventually, he says the company plans to branch out into RSS-feeds, other social networks and even a desktop version. Here’s my humble suggestion for the desktop version: A Digsby-like service that only bothers me with pop-ups on subjects I’m interested in! I would sign up in a heartbeat, seriously…
