There are a lot of different search engines out there, and they each get slightly different results. Republics is a simple tool that helps you compare results from different search engines effortlessly. All you have to do to use it is go to the Republics website, enter in your search query, and choose the search engine you’d like to use from the drop-down box. Click the “In Window” box, and Republics collapses down to an unobtrusive bar at the top of the screen that shows your search terms and the drop-down box.
On the rest of the page, you’ll see the results from your chosen search engine. To switch to a different search engine, all you have to do is select the one you want from the drop-down box. Browser extensions like WebMynd have similar features and let you compare results side-by-side, but that can make your screen cluttered. What I like about Republics is how fast it is and how it conserves screen real estate. Although a similar feature is included in FireFox 3.5, Republics has more search engine choices and it works on all browsers.
The user interface is simple, clean and intuitive. Although the concept has been done before, I like the way Republics has executed, and I’ve found it a rather useful web browsing tool so far.
What do you think of Republics? Is it useful to you, or do you have a browser extension you like better?
