Everyone has something that they want to achieve, but let’s face it…it’s easy to get sucked in by all of the minute details of daily life and put your goals on the back burner. Lifetick is a web application that makes it easy to achieve your goals by helping you draw up a plan, create to-do lists and track your progress.

Of course, productivity and time management apps are a dime a dozen. What makes Lifetick stand out, and how do they measure up to the competition? One of the unique things about Lifetick is that the app is centered around the SMART method of goal-setting.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the concept, SMART is an acronym that describes effective goal-setting. Basically, goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-specific.

In other words, Lifetick is different because it makes you think about what your goals are and why you want to acheive them. When you sign up, you are asked to identify your “core values.” When you create a goal, you have to tie it into a core value and then create relevant tasks that will help you acheive it.

Lifetick also has an excellent user interface, with lots of charts, pie graphs and customizable widgets to help you track your progress towards your goals.  Just like Remember the Milk, when you complete a task, you get to experience the immense satisfaction of checking it off. There’s also a journal where you can record your thoughts and experiences. Soon, you’ll be able to backdate entries and see your upcoming tasks and due dates from the journal page, too.

Lifetick is definitely useful in terms of helping you create a plan to achieve long-term goals.  However, because of its focus on smart goal-setting, it’s no substitute for a daily to-do list app like Remember the Milk.  Unfortunately, not everything that you have to do in a given day is going to tie in with your long-term goals or your core values.

Personally, I would find Lifetick more useful if it integrated with a daily task management app or if it included a way to create a daily-to list that includes mundane but necessary tasks as well as goal-related tasks. Still, I appreciated how the app helped me plan out the necessary steps to achieve each goal. And the widgets on the status page are cool! Also, for all of you iPhone users out there: there is an iPhone app.

What do you think? Would using Lifetick help you achieve your goals?

    No. Read below for why.
“[...] SMART is an acronym that describes effective goal-setting. Basically, goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-specific.”
    Example:
You have an idea you want to turn into an actual real-world entity. Using SMART, you come up with a nice series of goals which are specific to the task at hand, clearly defined chronologically, and they are even measurable (w00t)! Unfortunately, you have no clue if said series of goals is achievable (nobody has *ever* taken an idea even remotely like yours and turned it into a real-world entity) or relevant (again, due to never being done before, what was once a nice series of goals has now descended into a series of Yak shaving expeditions).
The above example points out the critical flaw in SMART: it only works in me-too scenarios where someone else has already defined the path between where you are and where you want to be.
If you are content with riding on other’s coattails, then by all means feel free to use the SMART methodology. However, if you actually want to contribute to society (and better humanity), might I suggest you look into other forms of strategic planning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_planning); yes they are generally harder to do (when compared with SMART), that is more often than not what happens when you do something of real value.
[::gasp::, you might even leave a *legacy*; you know, the type where people for centuries after you are dead refer to you by one name (first or last) and everyone instantly knows who you are talking about (i.e., Mozart, Shakespeare, Einstein, Pascal, da Vinci, et cetera).]
