Keep a Finger on the Pulse of Your Servers

Servers are the backbone of the Internet. Whether you work as a system administrator or just want to ensure that your website is performing well, it’s important to be able to measure the performance of your servers so that you can quickly fix any problems that arise.

Server Density is an app that keeps an eye on your servers for you and alerts you if there are any issues that need to be addressed.  Simple apps like Pingdom can tell if your site is down, but wouldn’t it be better not to get to that point at all?  Every 60 seconds, Server Density puts together a “server snapshot” using the following metrics: CPU load, memory usage & process count.

With a paid account, Server Density will also monitor disk usage, network traffic & Apache status.  You can configure your account to alert you by email or text message if an issue occur, hopefully allowing you to fix it before the server goes down completely. Also, you can look back and see exactly what has happened with your servers at any time over the past month (18 months on paid accounts), so if you have a server issue that resolves itself before you are able to fix it, you can look back , see what happened and take steps to keep it from happening again.

While there are other apps out there for monitoring servers, they tend to either be very simple or very complex. Server Density is innovative because it stakes out a comfortable middle ground. The user interface is clean and attractive, and the tabs on the top make it easy to navigate.  For the less tech-savvy among us, cut-and-paste instructions for installation are included.

Sorry, PC guys-the product is compatible with Linux and Mac OS operating systems only at this point, although support for Windows is on the horizon.  As long as you’re using a compatible operating system, Server Density could be an incredibly useful tool to help you keep your server running more smoothly with less downtime.

What do you think of Server Density? Would it be helpful to you, or are there other products out there that do a better job of meeting your needs?
