Get More Out Of Your Search Engine

Google rules the web because they have an awesome search engine, but that doesn’t mean they are the be-all and end-all of search. When you’re looking for information on a certain topic, you’ll often get better results if you compare the results you get from Google with results from different sites or search engines.

Of course, it can be time-consuming to search that way. That’s where Webmynd comes in. This handy browser extension lets you create your own custom search, placing search results from other sites on the side of the screen in Google (also works with Yahoo and Live Search), so you can easily see what you’re missing.

You can choose the sites you search, too, with options ranging from shopping sites like Amazon.com to social media sites like Digg and Reddit.  Of course, you can also search Twitter to see what people are saying about the topic in question. Or, look for videos on YouTube. Wikipedia is another option-although I’m not sure it’s worthwhile since Wikipedia pages usually show up in the first page of Google results anyway.  Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing, is also available.

Webmynd has another cool feature called the “dock.” Once you’ve found something cool using their custom search, you can use the dock to share it on your favorite social media sites with just a couple of clicks. To conserve precious screen real estate, the dock collapses down into a small sidebar when you’re not using it. Finally, there is a recording feature that records snapshots of the sites you visit so that y0u can easily find them again later. No worries-you can turn this feature off completely or set it to never record certain sites.

Webmynd’s user interface is easy to use-once you install the extension, the “Configurator” walks you through set up.  Although the concepts behind Webmynd (being able to compare results from different search engines and being able to easily share links) are not new,  Webmynd compensates for that by being easy to use and convenient.

The features are certainly useful, but Webmynd only works on the main Google search page. I wish it also worked with Google’s news and blog searches.

What do you think of Webmynd?  Are there similar tools that perform better? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

  10. [...] Unlike Webmynd, which tries to improve your search experience by letting you compare results from other search engines and websites on one screen, DeeperWeb focuses on helping you sift through the results Google gives you to find the results that you want. They do this with a tag cloud (called the DeeperCloud) that categorizes results and lets you narrow down your search with just a few clicks. In the example above, I searched for “iPhone 3GS” and then filtered through the results by clicking on the tag for “unlock.” [...]
