Easily Post Links To Twitter

Sharing links on Twitter can be a pain if you do it the old-fashioned way: Log in to your Twitter account, go to a URL-shortening website, paste in the URL, then copy and paste the shortened URL into Twitter. Fortunately, very few people who have been using Twitter for any length of time do it that way anymore! BigTweet is one of many apps that make it quick and easy to post links on Twitter.

BigTweet is basically just a bookmarklet that you drag and drop onto your browser toolbar. Then, whenever you find a page you want to link to, you click on the bookmarklet and the BigTweet window opens up. From here, you can log in to Twitter (OAuth is coming soon), write your message, shorten your URL with bit.ly and post it to Twitter and/or Friendfeed.

There are similar apps out there, such as Tweetburner, Hootsuite and others. BigTweet stands out primarily for its simplicity-it’s great for people who just want a way to post quickly and easily to Twitter and don’t have multiple Twitter accounts.

It will also let you add special unicode characters to your tweets, like smiley faces, arrows and hearts.  If you  can’t keep it down to 140 characters, you can enable 240 character mode and BigTweet will split your tweet for you. You also have the option of bookmarking the link you’re tweeting in Delicious. If you have a bit.ly account, you can also sign in through BigTweet to track your links.

All in all, BigTweet has a lot of useful features packed into an easy to use package. It won’t work for everyone, but for a lot of Twitter users, it could be a really useful app.

What do you think of BigTweet? Is there a Twitter app you like better?

  2. Hey-o,
Just wanted to quickly say that HootSuite has this feature built-in. We call it the Hootlet tool: simply drag it into your bookmarks toolbar and tweet instantly from any webpage. Thanks!

    • Thanks! I love Hootsuite, actually.
