Being in an auto accident is scary. Traumatic, even. Then, there’s the aftermath, as you try to fight back the ensuing adrenaline rush long enough to remember what exactly you’re supposed to be doing.  Fumbling for your insurance card, talking to the police, figuring out what to do with your car…it can all be more than a little bit overwhelming!

To help customers deal with having an auto accident, Nationwide has taken the innovative step of releasing a claims app for the iPhone. The app, an industry first,  has a lot of awesome features wrapped up in a simple, intuitive user interface. First, you can call the police through the app.  Then, you can take pictures of the accident scene with your iPhone. If you’re a Nationwide customer, the app will send them to Nationwide-although the company notes that they are not legally required to use these pictures when they process your claim.

Also, if you’re insured with Nationwide, the app is integrated with Google Maps to help you find the nearest Nationwide-certified  repair shop. Caught in the dark? It even turns your iPhone into a flashlight!

The Nationwide Mobile app  offers a place to store your insurance policy information, as well as the name and phone number of the other person’s insurance company. One person who reviewed the app in the iPhone store noted that it did not provide a place for the other person’s policy number, however, and there’s no place to record your personal recollection of the accident. Adding these features would make the app even more useful.

The Nationwide Mobile app is free for everyone However,  some of the features, including summoning a tow service, locating a repair shop, and of course, starting a claim, only work for Nationwide customers.
