Do you have a hard time making decisions? Do you agonize over how to part your hair? Do you obsess over whether or not you dare eat a peach? TS Eliot’s J. Alfred Prufrock would have loved Hunch, an app that helps make decisions for you. Instead of going on and on for 130 lines about his inability to make a decision, Prufrock could have saved himself (and English Lit students everywhere) a lot of time and hassle by letting Hunch decide for him.
Here’s how Hunch works. After you create your account, you answer a series of amusing questions about yourself, your habits and your likes and dislikes. This helps Hunch create a profile for you. Then, you can play different “Topics” created by other Hunch users. For example, I chose the topic “Where should I go camping in the United States?” I answered a series of questions about what I was looking for in a camping location, and got back a series of suggestions, including Cumberland Gap and Red River Gorge in Kentucky.
Both places seem like they would offer decent backpacking opportunities, especially Red River Gorge. All in all, pretty good recommendations, considering the fact that the site is still being developed.
The user interface is excellent and the concept is innovative, but the usefulness of the site at present is somewhat limited by the relatively small number of topics. Over time, Hunch will collect more topics and more information, so it will be able to give better, more accurate recommendations for a wider variety of questions. By the time it’s ready for public release, the usefulness factor should be much improved.
Hunch is currently invitation-only. To get invited, go to the site, submit your email address, and they’ll send you an email invitation a few days later. Don’t forget to leave feedback on the results you get from using Hunch, as this will help them provide more accurate results in the future.
