Do you have trouble keeping track of all the different social networking sites that you use? Do you want more control over how you present yourself online? Nomee is a service that lets your manage your profiles on over a hundred social networking sites from a single application. After you create a Nomee account, you can create “Nomee” cards that have your picture and links to your profiles on various social networks.
The cool thing about these cards is that you can create different cards to share with different people. So, for example, you could share your Linked In profile with a potential employer without sharing your MySpace profile. The idea of creating customizable cards is neat, and an it’s easy way to try to manage your online profile and keep business and pleasure separate. Being able to follow of all of your contacts from one centralized location is also convenient.
However, the user interface, while attractive, is somewhat difficult to navigate. Also, only contacts that have joined Nomee and shared Nomee cards come up in your newstream.
The service would be a lot more useful if it would allow you to view updates for your contacts on the different social networks without them having to participate in Nomee. Otherwise, unless you can get all of your contacts to join Nomee, you still have to visit Facebook, MySpace, etc to see their updates.
Also, you should be aware that the only real way to control your online profile is to keep your social profiles private and/or filter the information you post about yourself. If you post pictures of yourself on your public MySpace profile that are, shall we say, compromising in nature, your business contacts can still find them-even if your MySpace profile isn’t on your “business” Nomee card.
Nomee claims that people are less likely to search for information on you if you proactively provide them with the information you want them to see. That may be true, but don’t let it give you a false sense of security-unless you don’t mind the idea of your boss knowing exactly what you did on your last vacation!
